Good acoustic guitar for $250-300? - RichCI - 11:40 06-12-05

A woman I work with wants to start playing guitar again. She has
played some in the past, but not extensively, and is looking to take it
up again. She'd like to spend around $250-300. She's rather petite
and the size of the neck and body is of concern; she told me she used
to play her sister's guitar (I don't know what make or model it is) and
felt that the neck was too large for her hands and the body felt
awkward.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

For ease of learning (nylon strings) and cheapness I would recommend a
cheap classical guitar.
If she doesn't want to spend much money and prefers the sound of steel
strings I would get the cheapest steel string acoustic I could find.
Under $100.
For the best sound I'd get any steel string with a solid top.
If I had $300 and had to buy a brand new guitar I would get :

have her buy a used Yamaha FG-75, they're on eBay all the time. get the
red label vintage, much better than the later ones. It'll cost her
about $150 plus shipping. add no more than $40 tune up at your local
luthier, and you'll have a $200, small-bodied ass-kicker. i own one and
my luthier told me the whole history of these great little guitars as
he raved about my purchase acumen. uh, okay!

Rich,
Parlor guitars are small bodied. Classical guitars are small bodied but
the necks are difficult for small hands. There are lots of shallow body
steel strung guitars though I don't like their sound.
It's best if she goes to a bunch of music stores and tries guitars. She
should ask for advice and make clear that she is shopping but not buying
today. Once she knows what fits her hands and ears she can go back and
negotiate a deal.
She should get a final price on a guitar, hardcase (not a gig bag), a new
set of strings, and a peg winder in my opinion.

I have a Yamaha F-310 or osmething like that.. I frikkin love that
thing, and it's tiny and would be good for women (I think it was
originally bought for my sister a long time ago).. Cheap too I believe,
but it's my favourite acoustic I've ever used!

The Seagull Grande is a parlor guitar, which I think is in the price range.
The A&L Ami solid top versions are a bit less expensive, from the same
company, also nice. The Baby Taylor is a 3/4 size (travel) guitar that is
very comfortable to play, and might be available at $300. I have one of
those, which my daughter inherited. Tanglewood also make a good sounding
travel guitar similar in size and shape to the Baby Taylor.
It might even be possible to get a Larrivee Parlor for that price. Very nice
guitars.

Ibanez Artwood series have solid tops and nice narrow necks.

Tony I agree on the A&L, nice guitar for the money.

For acoustic guitars in this price range I like the
Sigma (by Martin) guitars. There are several models
that discount to below $300 that are essentially
D28 copies. Look at the DM1, I think it's the smallest
of the 'real guitar' sized models. Only if this would still
feel too big would I consider a 3/4 or parlor size guitar.
good luck
