Melodic & Harmonic minors - Kernix - 10:15 06-12-05

Does anyone know any songs that were written with chords from a Melodic

Minor or Harmonic Minor key, something relatively well known? I would
like to see how other
musicians handle the chords.

Thanks!
Jim

Yngwie uses Harmonic Minor for 80% of his material. He'd be a good guy to
listen too - even his work with Alcatrazz.

Melodic Minor I haven't heard much of...

The modes of melodic minor are used extensively in jazz.

A good tune for MM as a i min chord would be Harlem Nocturne (theme song for
many detective films and TV) like Mike Hammer

The tonal center is around an E minor chord with a Major 7 added (perfect MM
i chord)

Yeah, I've strarted working with modes but I bit off more than I can
chew. I was practicing all major scale modes, minor/major pentatonics,
blues scales, harmonic minor modes, melodic minor modesa, augmented
scale, whole tone, Half-whole dim, ... in all 5 positions - TOO MUCH.
I'm back practicing the pents, Ionian, Dorian, Mixo & Blues, and Dorian
Blues. Once I get them down I'll tackle the tougher ones.

Can't seem to find sheet music for Harlem Nocturne. Is a Bass guitar
rendition. Do you know the changes?

you might want to see if you can find a Danny Gatton portfolio, he
covered this on his _Cruisin' Deuces_ album.

Hi Kernix

A little confused. You ask about chords but most answers are about
soloing.

First, there are major and their relative minor keys, 12 in all No
harmonic or melodic keys.
These scales can be harmonized for their own set of chords.
The chords derived are more often used as substitutes rather than a
song being written from an entire progression.

If you use an aug. chord for a five chord that is borrowing from the
melodic minor scale.
In C this would be Gaug to C. (Gaug is root, major 3rd, and a sharp
5th, or G B D#. Common in blues etc.

Try IIm7b5 to V7b9 to IMajor (Or minor to hear the original minor
sound) In C this is Dminor7b5 to G7b9 to C or Cminor. This implies a
harmonic minor "two five one" progression but can resolve to a major
chord as well.
Very common in jazz.

When you play a minor pentatonic scale in a major key you are using
this idea. If you see a DMajor or EMajor or Amajor chord in a song in C
(very common) these are diatonic to minor scales and are substituted in
major keys.
When a song has an ecclesiastical cadence on the end it resolves a
song in a minor key to a major chord. Another common use of this
major/minor relationship. Greensleaves is a good eg.
FYI 'The Church' demanded that even songs written in a minor key end
in a Perfect or Major triad, Father son and Holy ghost thing.

Here is another harmonized minor scale.
Play Bb6/7 to E7b9 to A (or Aminor, Aminor6, Am7 etc.)

6X678X to X7676X to 577655 or 5X4555 etc
Bb6/7 E7b9 A Am6

or 6X6788 to X76766 to any A chord
Bb13 E7b9b5

Record a vamp that uses the first two chords as pickups or pushes to
an A chord and work on adding new colors to the old minor pentatonic
scale for melodic choices. (even that A# you have been avoiding) ;-)
Think funky!

Thanks!

I'm actually working on my soloing, but am interested in trying to work
with the minor scales. The harmonization is a little tougher for them.
That's why I'm looking at some examples.

The best thing I've learned recently is that any altered dom7 chord can
be used as a V7 chord to resolve to the tonic - 7b5, 7#5, 7b9, etc.
That blew my mine. I went home after learning that and tried it and no
matter how many notes in the altered 7th chord was not in the I chord's
major scale, it still sounded good.

Thanks again.
Jim
