Fender cyclone II - JohnnyK - 21:55 05-12-05

I just bought one of these and I'm very disapointed, and wondering if
anyone has any experience iwth them. I liked them in the store (I only
played for about 10 minutes iwth it) but now that I own one, it seems to
really hurt my wrist.. It is just a strat neck right? Also the
workmanship was so shoddy it was unbelievable, pickup screws were
stripped, pickups didn't raise (they have 3m weatherstripping behind
them instead of springs!) and the switches (They are like a jaguar,
underneath the pickguard) pull UP to turn on, so when I wack em with the
pic, they turn off. I'm considering finding a replacement neck as I
really like the Mustang neck, but now if I return it there is a 10%
restock fee, adn the mustang is about $100 more.. How much would a pro
setup matter? It didn't seem to good the way I got it, even though the
guy said he did it, (Only took him 10 minutes though?).. Any thoughts,
opinions about that guitar in general? (PLease don't give me any more
buyers remorse, dang thing is pricey for me).. :D

For the most part, the things you describe are pretty easily fixable.
This should be an OK guitar.
For example, it should be trivial to remove the pickup screws, replace the
foam with something stiffer (this is exactly the way other such pickups -
like on a P-Bass or Jaguar - are mounted; there's nothing wrong with it in
principle), and turn the switches around or swap the wires.
How, exactly, does it hurt your wrist and on what way does it seem different
from other guitars?
The first things that comes to mind are that the nut is a bit too high or
the neck has a bit too much bow, or that you have the guitar strapped on at
an inappropriate height, so it excessively bends your wrist. More details
would help.
To answer your question about the neck, no, it is *not* just a strat neck.
It has a scale length about three quarters of an inch shorter than a Strat.
The necks are probably not just interchangeable on each other's bodies.
As to a pro setup, that can help but really only if it's done by someone who
can actually do one.

Did you "just bought" it new, or used?
Dunno, I've had no problems from my original single coil / HB
MIM Cyclone. About the only thing I could wish for on it, is
a bit more fine finish on the frets. Otherwise it's a killer
guitar.
PK's right about the scale length. It's 24 3/4" like a Gibson
instead of 25 1/2" like a Strat or 24" like a Mustang. Necks
are not interchangeable.
Regards,
John King

It's brand new.. I laughed when I saw the 'quality control' signed
thing.. But I phoned fender, and they are useless, as is the store, so,
I'm stuck with it.. Your cyclone doesn't have those dang switches under
the pickguard, don't know why they'd wire them so down is off though,
seems stupid. Did your have horrible setup issues hwen you got it? Is
there ANY replacement neck I can get that would have the
mustang/jazzmaster contour/radius? Thanks!
