They sent me email asking if I (or my band) wanted to take part in their
tour/band contest.
Never heard of the company...Is it for real? I wonder if it would be worth
it to rebuild my band lineup and go for it?
I understood from the email they're offering a 30-minute contest gig here
locally, the winners of which would go on for bigger venues to Germany and
so on, and something about Boston and 'Vans Warped' tour.
Trouble is, I'm so lazy I don't know if I care to go through the trouble of
playing live once again.

AND I really worry about the fact that taking part requires traveling with
the whole band to meet their rep at our expense, and then discussing
schedules, and then paying an enrollment FEE...which I have no idea how big
it would be...hmm...kinda suspect.

It's semi-big here in Sweden. Demo/original bands compete for a record
contract a big gig or something in a battle of the bands type event.

It's for real. A FEW bands do win prizes but basically you do a lot of
work and Emergenza gets a lot of money. How well you do is determined
by how many of your friends pay Emergenza to see you.

Right....so then I'm definitely not interested. Thanks!

DeeAa,
You pay them $75US. You go to the show at your own expense. Everybody
in the band gets a freebie (strings, T-shirt). You play for 1/2 hour. You
are judged somehow. If you win you move up to the next level of
competition.
Not sure there is any profit in this for anybody unless Emerganza can
get the equipment, hall, technical support, judges, et c. for next to
nothing. Certainly the bands get very little out of this. Still, I guess
your group could be voted Miss Congeniality or something, a story to tell
the grandkids one day.

Emergenza makes SHITLOADS of money.
Who wins is based on who sells the most tickets. Emergenza doesn't pay
the bands.
Pretty simple really.
I've been to two Emergenza shows and they were packed. 2-300 people.

It sounds like a musical version of those "model search" companies that
make fortunes off gullible young women- not exactly a scam, but not
exactly a rocket to stardom either.

I'm missing something here since I've never even considered doing
this.Where's the shitloads of money? Here's what I see; Emerganza hires a
hall, gives out a bunch of cheap freebies, hire's a sound tech, rents a PA
and a bunch of amps, hires some judges (?), and flies one or two employees
in to organize and run this. I can believe that the bands' entrance fees
just about pay for this and Emerganza pockets the crowd admissions. Not
bad. But then there's the semi-finals. Same expenses but no entrance fees
and no crowds of band followers. Crowd admissions need to pay for
everything. And then in the finals Emerganza also flies, houses and feeds
the bands.

When Emergenza was in Toronto it was $75 to enroll. A lot of bands
enrolled.
How well you did was determined by how many advance $15 tickets you
sold. A ticket also only got you into one show. Not the semi finals.
You'd have to buy another ticket to see that. The small show I went to
had about 200 people and the semi final had about 500.
The clubs that this was held in already had PA's and their own
soundmen.
So out of pocket, Emergenza had to pay for say two employees, the
rental of the club for the night, some rental gear and some cheap give
aways.
Check out the schedule in my city alone!
http://www.emergenza.net/document/shows/schedule.asp?dett=yes&res=41
For every city, one band gets to go to Germany.
They're making TONNES of money.
