So there's this Strat... - Grumpy - 18:43 04-12-05

A few months back I picked up an MIJ Strat at the local cash converters.
Got a nice price for it, 250 euros, that's cheap for around here.
Next to the MIJ were two other Fenders --an MIM vintage reissue and a
really nice looking MIA. The MIM sold. The MIA is still there, it's been
there for at least a year now.
There's nothing wrong with it, it's just there. The original price was 700
or closer to 800 euros (still a good price for an MIA over here).
But now the price is down to 499 euros...and I'm sure I could have it for
450 (probably not much lower though).
I'm tempted...I like my MIJ a lot, but I'm not impressed by the pickups.
And the MIA is clearly a nicer quality guitar...two piece body (you can see
the grain through the finish)...don't know the year, it's probably fairly
recent though.
I'm not even that much of a strat fan, it's just that the MIJ is a really
reliable guitar. Still, I'd sell that if I get the MIA....
Your thoughts?

Buy it. If it's in good shape, and you take care of it, and the price
is as good as you say, worse case scenario is you put it on ebay in a
year or two and you get your money back and a couple of years playing
with an American Strat.
I've auctioned off some of my old gear in the last couple of months,
and it was gratifying to see that all the "extra" money I spent buying
good gear (ie. American guitars, amps with tubes) was a good
investment: in every case I broke even or actually made a bit of
money. And it's all great gear besides.
Of course, the money I got went right back where it come from - I
picked up a beat up old Strat, a Les Paul and another amp :>

Yeah...I'm trying to identify it right now. I don't have the serial number
yet, so all I can go on is the color --it's definitely a transparent color
--from memory, it looks like the transparent teal, it's the only color that
seems to correspond to the guitar
Of course, I'm a bit colorblind...
But I get the impression that that color was only available on the Highway
1 series? In which case, the guitar isn't worth all that much. Are the
Highway 1 guitars marked as such on the headstock?
Time to hit google....

if it has satin finish, and 6 hole tremolo, and has the vintage spegetti
logo, then its a highway 1. American standards uses 2 hole tremolo. If it
has gloss finish and 2 hole trem then its either American standard or
deluxe...

Yeah, if I'm remembering right, it's definitely a satin finish...it's a
very pretty guitar, but there's no way a used Highway 1 is worth 500 euros.

If you want it and it's worth what they're asking, buy it.
If not, don't.

Just go check the serial number. Quick way to find out where it was
built. And try it out, of course.
