Maybe it's the impression we Americans have of the indentured Asian &
Russian prodigies, enslaved by harsh dominating instructors, greedy
parents and politically motivated cultural deacons, their childhoods
robbed for the glory of Mother Country on the world stage. I dunno,
maybe I watch 20-20 too much...
She couldn't play like that unless she loved it. This ain't
gymnastics. No amount of intimidation and finger-smacking with rulers
can make a person play like that if they don't have "it". That look on
her face is The Muse. If it wasn't there, she WOULD be at home playing
with dolls....just another "useless" girl in a nation that would as
soon have her dead. She's got a gift.
She IS a gift.

This raises an interesting question. Who do you *really* play for, the
audience, those you consider your musical peers, or yourself? I don't think
there are right and wrong answers to this, but I think musos can be more
comfortable with themselves if they know the answer as it applies to them.
