Weird results w/new pickup - Mark Jones - 12:47 01-12-05

I have an inexpensive Ephiphone-ish alnico-humbucker guitar, and I
swapped out the neck pickup for a Duncan Phat Cat just for kicks. The
Duncan sounds pretty good -- much chimey-er than the muddy humbuckers
-- but something odd happens when I have both pickups selected. The
output goes WAY down and I have to raise the volume on the amp because
I can't get enough volume even when I turn the volume pot up to 10. And
the sound's really thin and twangy. Is it a crapshoot when you go with
two such different pickups in a guitar? Or would there need to be
wiring/capacitor adjustments to get these to sound right together?

Any chance you got the wires reversed on the new pickup? It could be
the wrong phase or polarity with the other one.

Just an idea - But I'm not very good at wiring. I just paid a tech $45
to fix the crappy job I did on my own SG.

You may have installed the Duncan backwards causing the 2 pickups to be
out of phase when both are on.

Change the ground wire to where you now have the hot and vice versa.
It should be alright then.
