Guitar String Not Staying In Tune - Lone Clapper - 08:19 01-12-05

My Fender Strat had been staying perfectly in tune for weeks at a time.
Seriously, I could play for two hours, set it down, pick it up a day or two
later and it would be perfectly in tune.

For the past 3 days or so, the high-E string will not stay in tune. I tune
it, play some chords for a few minutes, no bends, and the high-E is already
out of tune.

Any ideas of what could be causing this? Do I need new strings? A tuning
peg problem?

I've never experienced anything like this before.

Thank you for your help.

have you tried streching the string a bit then tune it back up until it
stays in tune?

Does it go sharp? Flat? Any more details you can provide?

If it has a ball end, and it's going flat, maybe the wrap around the
ball is flawed and is slipping. I used to complain about the Fender
strings to the music store guy and he's give me the look like I was
crazy. From then on when I'd buy strings I'd look at each one first as
some of the Fender strings did not have the nice little tight wrap, and
they'd eventually slip. When I finally found one like that in the
package, I showed it to him and he 'stood corrected'.

When I started using Bullets, the problem ended.

Hi. There are only a few things that cause a slipping string: loose windings
on the post, the ball end coming loose, or a bad/loose gear. If you make
sure the windings are tight on the post and you cross over your windings at
least once to lock it down this should be OK. A loose ball end is very
unlikely. If this happens, change the string. If the gear itself is slipping
check to see if the knob button is loose. Usually the knob button is on the
shaft with the worm gear which turns the string post, and if it is loose it
can cause slippage. Go around and snug up all of the knob mounting screws
and you will find the tuning will be more reliable, as you are pulling the
gears tighter together. This only works on sealed tuners with removable
knobs, solid shafts cannot be adjusted. Though with open gear tuners if you
find slippage or a lot of play and you find you have some other old tuners,
you may be able to replace a worn gear with one from another set which will
be tighter, and stay more reliably in tune.
I hope this helps,

I hate to say this, but the first pack of Fender strings I got was rusted in
the package! I think I will go with D'dardio (or whatever the hell its
spelled)

Isn't it true that the string binding in the nut slot can cause what appears
to be string slippage? Isn't that what Big Bend Nut Sauce (or whatever the
heck it's called) is for? I also thought that sometimes (though more rarely)
binding can occur under string trees.

Re: Guitar String Not Staying In Tune - Maximus9 - 12:56 01-12-05

Big bends nut sauce doesn't work, I just got done trying it and it is a
waste of money. Use pencil lead instead.
But back to the original question.
If the tuning machines are okay,no loose screws etc. then I would
suggest replacing the string.
Also if you have been playing the the same set for a long time, replace
the whole set, then do the appropriate stretching and tune up and see
if it's better, but change the first string first to see if that helps.
Don't use regular Fender strings because they go bad quickly. Bullets
might be better, though I like to use Darcos, D'Addarios, even
Musicians Friend strings, or Ernie Balls (Clapton uses those).
I really think that the string is possibly just worn out.
Make sure you're using the proper amount of windings on them, that
would be about 3 windings on each string.

Hope that helps,

Steve

Is time to change the string.
Breaking string is not only the one reason for new string.
