Adjusting to tall frets - VX - 16:32 29-11-05

I just got an ESP guitar with XJ frets- I assume that means extra jumbo. They
are the highest frets I've had on a guitar, but I'm mostly used to older
Fenders so my experience is sorely limited in this respect. These frets seem
really nice but if I press a little too hard the notes go out of tune
(obviously). This might be because I'm using 9s (the store recommended 10s
for this guitar), but I have problems bending on heavier guages, including
10s.

Hopefully I'll just get used to this and learn to press just hard enough to
fret the notes while everything still stays in tune. But in order to do that
I have to develop better awareness of how hard I am pressing. Its hardest
with chords- I seem to automatically press quite hard on some notes and on
this guitar that just doesn't work. My question is- for others who have had
the same experience in transition from low to high frets- was this just
something you just got used to and adapted to naturally, or was it a big deal
that took a while to adjust to?

It will take a while to adjust to the tall frets. Once you get used to
them, it may seem difficult to play on guitars with medium frets. I'd
give it about a month of playing on just the ESP and nothing else. You
just may get spoiled and only want to play guitars with tall frets. I
find them easy to deal with and great for bendy blues soloing.

Part of the reasoning behind taller frets is that they make bending easier
--so give the 10s a try, you might end up liking them better.

It takes a little while. You might find it helpful to do some exercises,
akin to playing scales: play to a tuner, and watch the tuner display to
help regulate your touch. If you don't have a tuner with an appropriate
display, but can connect your guitar to your computer, the AP tuner works
very well and is free:

Like scales, you might do this for a few minutes at the start of a practice
session. It should help quickly.

Of course, the tuners only work on one note at a time (unless you're using a
hex pickup, which you probably aren't).

I agree. I use .010's on my Les Paul and SG, but .009's on my Strat and
Tele. For the very same reasons.

Yes. The guitar now provides both reduced bending resistance and
traction... heavier strings can feel lighter.

Thanks for all the responses- now at least I think I know what I'm doing!
I'll practise with this guitar until it feels normal to me and I can play
chords reliably in tune. And I'll try 10s.
