Vox AC30CC verdict? - demysaid@yahoo.com - 09:03 29-11-05

So I tried one of the new Vox AC30CC (both 1x12 and 2x12) with stock
speakers and I thought they sounded great!! I've played many vintage
Vox amps, as well and my previous amp was a Tophat ambassador (great
amp but to noisy for recording). I've read some horror stories about
breakdowns and things not working with these new Vox amps. I would
really love to have one of these but I do play proffesionally and I
can't afford to have an amp break down on a gig. I also cannot afford a
Hand Wired version. Anyone have any info or insight on the matter? Are
these harsh reviews more internet hype?

Thanks

Are you married to the brand name?

If not, check out Laney's stuff...I just bought a VC15 and I really like
it...as close to the Vox sound as I need to get personally.

I'm probably going to add a VC30 in a few months' time.

Figure this, you can buy two Laneys for the price of one Vox...

Vox amps have never been known to be reliable. Vox amps of old could be
a distraction for the band members because they would be watching and
waiting for the next fire. I dont know why but inside the chassis there
seems to be about twice the component count of other comparable amps.
It isnt because of the top boost either which is basically nothing . I
think the signal just passes through a different cap for that?

It's a load of bollocks. I've been around the AC30 for years and never had
probs with it. If I did though, parts are easy to come by, but they are very
reliable, and....'they sound great!

Have a listen :- http://www.voxamps.co.uk/products/ac30/vox_ac30cc.ram

Glad to hear you have had good luck with them. I've had good luck with
mine as well.

But as for what Keith said- I wouldn't call it "bollocks." The old
small-vent AC30's were notorious for overheating, even catching on
fire.

My old AC30 has larger vents, and has been absolutely rock-solid
reliable for the 3 or 4 years I've owned it (and gigged with it). But
the heat that pours out of that thing is enough to keep your coffee
from getting cold!

Does anyone ever think to install a cooling fan in them?

I try to read anything on this amp, because the 2x12 with blue alnico's
is on my wish list.

I recall a tech discussion about a component that was "cheaped" on. Was
it a cap where operating voltage was very close to the max spec? Not
sure, but you might want to google it.

I still lust for one, and I'm still watching for all comments.

I believe another guy bought a "new" one from ebay that had a reverb (or
something) that was not operating.

Some people just don't want to be "close" to the sound they are after.

That's why they play Gibsons through cranked tube amps with single
effects pedals!

Hee hee

Ah, so there are diferent sizes of vents on the rear? I didn't know that.
Mines heats up too, but it 'is' a valve/tube amp after all, so it's to be
expected. So how big a difference in the vents then, and in which models are
they smaller? Maybe the newer AC30CC model?

The vents are on the top (to let the hot air out). Small vents went
away in the 60's, I believe. Maybe early 70's?
