Hello all,
I just got back from a music store and played a Mexican Stratocaster
that had been modified with EMG pickups and other amenities that the
salesman called a "David Gilmour setup." I guess this store runs a
sort of custom shop in which they upgrade Mexican Strats and other
typically lower end guitars. Anyway, I really liked the guitar and it
is going for $799. I'm just wondering if this is a good price or
should I be able to get a standard Mexican strat and have someone do
the upgrades for less money than this. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Alan

Alan,
Sounds very high for Mexican Strat... even with the EMGs. $799 is
about twice the street value. Take a look at what they are selling for
in Ebay. Should give you a good reference point.

You should be able to get one for around $300.00. Brand new. Less off of
Ebay. $799.00 is a ridiculous price for a mexi-strat.

I know $799 is way too high for a mexi-strat on its own. I was
wondering if it is too much for the strat + the EMG pickups + someone
to install them. I'm not enough of a tech to be able to do the
installation myself.

Yes you are, don't sell yourself short. Especially on a strat, changing the
pickups is relatively easy, just do them one at a time.
If they're real EMGs, then that adds a bit to the price, sure. But be
careful --there are a lot of 'designed by EMG' pickups out there now...not
quite the same thing.
And you got to ask yourself -- do you really want EMG pickups? They're kind
of specialist/anal types, if you ask me. What's wrong with stock strat
pickups?

A new Mexi strat is about $380, the EMG SA pickup set for Strats is $199
and is supposedly (according to EMG) what David Gilmour prefers.

Thanks for all of the input, everyone. I really appreciate it and I
think I might have otherwise made an expensive mistake! I guess my
follow up question would be which would you, personally choose:
American standard strat, Mexican strat (stock), or Mexican strat with
upgraded (Fender noiseless?) pickups?
Again, thanks for the ideas. This is my first electric purchase, and
it's a long time in the making. I want to make sure I look at all
angles.

Alan,
That sounds like an _awful_ lot to me.
For $200 less than that, you can get Shecters top model in their Diamond
line, which is the C-1 Classic.
It is very well made in Korea, and set up by Shecter at it's custom shop in
California before shipment.
Guitar Center carries them.
It comes with real (not designed) Duncan Seymour's. I think they are the JB
and '59, but you would have to verify that.
It's very well made (Duncans, Grover tuners, Mahogany with Maple Flame top),
etc...
I went with the C-1 Elite (Duncan Designed Pickups, but fine for me) because
I really liked the binding and the "Vine Of Life" inlays on the C-1 Classic
are a bit busy for me.
Both are sold by Musicians Friend and Guitar Center.

Still way too much --
even if the pickups cost
$200 and a tech wants
$100 for installing them!
