new sounds - DeeAa - 04:31 27-11-05

Here's my new guitar rig with sounds.

Here's a short clip I jammed over a drum machine of an old track I had. Just
2 guitars no bass.
Recorded with a studio mic in front, it mixes with some direct line from the
JMP which gives it some bottom.
I spoke into the mic when laying the rhythm track, so it can be heard what
is the actual playing volume.

The rhythm is a stratkenstein, lead a Jackson JTX I picked up cheap the
other week.
Haven't done any eqing, just a little compression. Just wanted to get the
basic sounds if anyone's interested how this gear sounds.

Here's a pic of the rig. The thing on top is the mic preamp which I use to
record this stuff on the computer, it has a D/A converter.

The cab has a single 10" 35W Marshall speaker; the cab is rather big for the
speaker, in an attempt to give it some more bottom.
It's a bit high-end midrangey for my taste, but that's the poweramp, not
much headroom for decent bass thump.
The poweramp used is a Cream Machine 1W tube amplifier, for this test I had
it at about quarter volume because my wife was in the next room...it's
bloody loud for one watt if I crank it. The sound would be better, warmer
too, but will have to try that later when I'm home alone.

I built the system specifically to be able to play cranked tube blues-rock
sounds at reasonable levels, and that it truly does, but it's still _very_
loud for home use.

There was one of these in the local cash converters a while back...I should
have picked it up (well, they wanted too much for it). Sounds great!

I'm just shocked at the volume you get ou of a 1 watt amp. I find it hard
to believe it's only 1 watt .. amazing.

i dig. how exactly are you getting those squeaky sounds on the lead?
is it pinch harmonics or something? i echo what crispy said about
volume... great saturation and tone for what seems to be a very low
watt setup!

Hmm, if I understood correctly, it's a part of my playing style and comes
from slightly touching the string with my thumb as I pick it. I also use it
on chords; kind of like a harmonic, stops the string from vibrating very
much and gives a kind of false harmonic, in correct note.

I guess it's something I started using when I was listening to a lot of ZZ
Top, Gibbons uses a similar technique quite a lot. (I think.) Like the
beginning of 'Just Got Paid' on Rio Grande Mud. Has to be something like
that. I need to have a very small pick always, so I can keep the thumb just
on the pick edge at all times, only a very small part of the pick is visible
and the thumb always almost touches the strings.

In chords, if you let the lower strings ring more and as you sweep out the
chord, bring the thumb onto the strings, you get the chord ring out the high
notes well separated from the bass notes, which I like. I only use full
6-string chords when I play, and I keep the tone from getting too all over
the place by damping with the palm and selectively damping some sounds I
pick with the thumb. In the rhythm part I use it too, from the E when I play
the couple of notes on B string right after, I don't let them ring out
either - I'm bashing full chords all the time in the rhythm too but just
keep damping and false picking the strings to keep the string separation.

Cheers,

Dee

i think that's called a pinch harmonic. i like the sound, i've been
trying to
get better at it, since three or four riffs i really like have pinch
harmonics
(or whatever) in them... zakk wylde does that kind of thing a lot too,
if
it's the same technique, he mostly does it on lower strings tho'.

thanks for the info, i'll keep practicing. =)
