Which Les Paul for me? - Champagne Charlie - 14:42 26-11-05
|
|
I am looking at these two Les Pauls and wonder which one should I buy.
http://www.reidys.com/index.pl?submit=Search&SubDepartment=Guitars&Keywords=gibson+lp+standard+hs
I play an Epi Les Paul and it feels great, but now I want the "real thing",
so as to speak.
I want my new Les Paul to have chunky frets for bending, and a nice camber
in the neck too. Not flat.
I also would like the neck to be quite slim...'not 'too' slim, but NOT thick
and/or broad.
Does anyone know which of these two would be best suited to my needs?

Weren't you supposed to be broke? :)
Since you already own an epi clone, why don't you take a look at yamaha aes
models?

The 50s neck is rounder and the 60s neck is slim taper so I guess it's the
60s you want.

60's slim taper and you cant go wrong. Now i am making the
assumption on the frets since every Gibson i have ever owned
or used had the same "chunky" frets. I am not 100%
on this though, check with the retailer. MJP

You've got things backwards.Flat necks are better for stretching
strings (bending) than a curved radius

Thanks for reminding me Rookie! ;o) You 'did' see the monthly terms on that
website, yes? I'm ready to sell my soul for that guitar, broke or no broke.
I've been getting it in the neck all evening from the wife about the "cost"
of it, but man, I just don't care. I just want to hold that lil beauty in my
hands...'for the rest of my life!
It's 40 quid a month over 3 years...'who cares! And I'm sober too! lol.
The Yamaha is not for me, but thanks for the thought, it's a nice guitar
too.

Thanks for the info, but could you give me more info on what exactly "slim
taper" means as regards Les Pauls? Do you also mean there's more of a
'camber' on the 50's model though? Does the 60's model get slimmer as it
gets closer to the headstock? I use the word 'camber' btw, but I've heard
another word for the same thing....'can't remember the darned thing at the
moment! (Ratio maybe?!).

The short answer is: Go with the 60's slim taper neck. The 50's neck is
almost like a baseball bat. However, there are strong supporters for each
type, and so it is your choice. To me, the 60's slim taper neck is
definitely thinner, and, for me, more comfortable.
My two cents: I had an both a Gibson and an Epi Les Paul in the same cherry
burst. I took out the stock pickups in the Epi and replaced them with
Gibson Les Paul pickups. The sound and feel of them are so close, I sold
the Gibson Les Paul.
Is the Epi a better guitar? Of course not. But, I still don't regret
selling the Gibson. However, I just jam at home. If I played for a living,
I would have kept both guitars, as the Gibson is a better instrument.
BTW, I buy watches from Europe and England for re-sale in the U.S., so my
guitar-price conversion skills are limited. That being said, if you are
planning to pay over $2,000.00 USD for a basic Les Paul, whoa....that price
seems a touch high.

Les Paul prices are a bit higher here than the States Dowe as we get
hit with a lot of tax etc. on top of the price you guys get to pay in
the states. The best sort of prices you see for Les Pauls new are
around the =A31100 pound mark, which comes out to around $1800 dollars.
And to tell the truth that's an unusually low price which you would
have to look around for to get. Been left-handed in mycase it's
amazingly irksome, I just had a look at the site Charlie has a link to
and the price for a left-handed Standard SG was just absurd.
Charlie, does it have to be a Gibson as we have companies like
Gordon-Smith or JJ closer to home that do fine instruments at much more
reasonable prices.
