drum machine - any recommendation? - vader - 06:59 23-11-05

we can't find an appropriate drummer, so I'm thinking in a drum machine
we play rock, so I don't need any hip hop, dance or house sounds, just real
acoustic kickdrums, snare and cymbals, so we can rehearse until we find a
drummer... or maybe forget them...

so that's it, real sounds, and very easy to programme

thanks!

For recording at home, I use a Boss DR-880. Out STANDING stereo drum
sounds, really controllable, very nice thing to have. A bit expensive, but
worth it. It takes time to get exactly what you want, the point being that
it will do exactly what you want. I don't know that I would take it out as
part of a band, only because I don't know how fast it can change.

For gigging the band, we used to use an Alesis machine, a fairly old one,
something or other-16 I believe, I didn't run it at all. It moved quickly
through the programs, not as many of them, fairly basic stuff, foot pedal in
and out, foot pedal fills. It worked well, and that band never went back to
a drummer.

Best sounds is the lates Boss machine, it is easy to program. Alesis even
faster for live use, not as many programs, reasonable sounds, much cheaper.

The opinions above are mine and mine alone.

I use the Boss DR-670...a step below the 880 someone else mentioned
here. I like it a lot, very crisp drum samples, fairly easy to program
patterns, VERY easy to sequence patterns into songs. I have two beefs
with it: Mine tends to freak itself out after a while during
programming and it automatically resets itself to a particular drum
kit, and will not change unless you turn off/turn on again. A minor
beef, and It's never happened during playback mode, and you don't lose
anything you've done up to that point. My second problem is a little
more annoying: When recording a "song" by sequencing patterns, I
believe you're stuck with a single tempo for that whole song. This
becomes impractical when, say, you go from a 3/4 > 4/4 in mid song and
you want that 4/4 to be at a different tempo. I haven't memorized the
manual, but I don't believe you can mix & match tempos within a song.

Other than these two issues, I recommend it.

Anyone here familiar with the Boss DR-770? It's a bit older unit I
know, but there seems to be a lot of them for sale on ebay at
reasonable prices.
