So I go to the GC and this salesguy says that I should really consider
getting a mex tele. why? because it's his absolutely fav and he thinks the
tone on it is the best. i leave and end up getting an american strat
somewhere else cuz i didn't trust the GC dude. so fast forward a month and
i'm back at GC and the same guy is there and i tell him i got an american
strat and he says oh! that's his favorite! he loves it! he wouldn't get
anything else! the mim's don't come close!. he forgot he was shilling the
mex tele a month ago. lol. there must have been a blue light special at that
morning's sales meeting for the mex tele. hoser.

I guess its typical GC but I dont like people talking that kinda crap
at me. A big percentage of people here already know exactly what they
want in a guitar and which is gonna deliver it.

Salespeople will say rave things about anything you mention, thats their
job. Unless the thing you mention isnt carried by the store, and is carried
by a competitor...

I was in the Austin Texas GC this past weekend. Guys seemed friendly
enough. One guy was working a setup on a couple of guitars during the
2 hours I spent in the store. They only asked me once or twice if I
needed any help. Not too pushy. Of course, I didn't ask them about
any guitars as they didn't have one that I wanted (I mean, if I'm going
to buy a US Strat, brand new, I'm getting the color and woods I want,
not what's hanging on the wall). Other than that, most of the guitars
did have strings on it that were older, but heck, what do you expect?
The place has to have at least 300 guitars in there and not all of the
salespeople are or can be trained to do proper setups.
I tend to ignore salesmen anyway. Unless they bring me a super deal,
they're just in the way.

Most commission salespeople are offered spiffs -- bonuses for selling
certain merchandise that are overstocked or disco'd. Generally you
can't trust their opinion on gear, but if you ask them to call you when
something you want is on sale, they're happy to do it.

Not the GC Salesman I deal with. According to him:
Gretsch- Makes an awesome guitar (We know)
Squire- Laminate and scrap metal (I bought three of them from him before he
said this but I was already aware of the quality anyway)
Epiphone- So so, you get what you pay for.
MIM Strats- Good beginner strat
Peavey- Low ends same as the Squires, but they make some decent guitars
Fender Tele- Saddled with a C&W name/branding. Recomended against buying one
(I like them and thought about buying one)

There are two sides to the Salesman coin. On the one hand, if you are truly
interested in a guitar but would like to adjust the truss rod a little, or
lower the bridge a little or even try it with a fresh set of strings of your
choosing, a salesman (better yet, a department manager) can be a real help.
When I found an SG that I was feeling was damn close to "the one," I
enlisted the aid of the manager of the guitar department at GC to take off
the truss rod cover and make some tweaks per my direction and put on strings
that didn't have other peoples boogers all over them. I bought the guitar.
I wouldn't recommend doing that if you were not serious. When I go to GC
now, that manager makes a point to come over and say hello but he leaves me
alone.
On the other hand, the creeps with the attitude that want to tell you what
to try and won't leave you alone can really ruin the experience.

When I walked into GC, I had a decent experience. I dealt with the
guitar dept. manager right off the bat, and he wasn't too pushy. The
store was pretty busy at the time, and I could see that he was much
more concerned with a young numbnuts trying to pick up the hardware off
the top shelf. I asked him to get about 5 different guitars off the
wall. I told him that I could handle tuning and all that, just give me
an amp to plug into. I made no bones about the fact that I wanted a
Strat, an American one at that. One of the ones he took off the wall
was mexican, though it was priced as an American one. I asked him what
was up with it ....if somebody made a mistake.
After going through the serial #/ SKU bit on his 'puter, he found that
someone had switched the tags for the one right next to it on the wall.
He was ready to give me 200 bucks off the correct price, but I didn't
like the action on the guitar . The neck was lousy feeling and the trem
springs felt very loose. I think I tried out about 10-12 different
guitars that day, and made a pain in the ass of myself about having an
empty guitar stand close by. I told the salesman that I was doing a
shootout and then he got the idea.
I finally bought the 4th strat I tried, An HSS Std. I thought the
sucker had some really nice tone to it and the neck action feels like a
prom queen's thighs. Once I picked it out, I had 3 different guys in
the store play something to see what they thought of the action and
sound. All 3 said the action was very smooth, ond only one guy said
that the sound wasn't 'Stratty' enough, no doubt from the bridge pup
being a 'bucker. Damned fine instrument tho. I got it home, plugged in,
hit that first power chord....mmmmmmm southern fried boogie.
