Best Strat for $500 - Mark Jones - 16:31 21-11-05

I have $500 to spend and I want the good-old-fashioned Strat quack. I
don't care if it's made in Mexico, made in Japan, made in USA,
wherever. I don't care if it's new or used. I just want the most I can
get out of my $500. I'd even consider buying cheap and modding. I'll
play everything before I buy, but help me narrow it down. I'll even
consider a non-Fender (like a G&L), as long as it's a player (which
G&Ls are!).

ebay, you can probably get an American Standard used on ebay. Dont buy cheap
and mod just because of price. If you buy cheap and mod, by the time you're
done you will have spent enough for an American Deluxe. People only mod
because they like a particular guitar's feel and wanted better
pickup/bridge.

Used Strat MIJ...I paid 250 euros for mine.
The big question is which neck profile you prefer --the MIJ, MIM and MIAs
all seem to have different profiles (not to mention the vintage reissues).
I personally prefer the thinner MIM necks --they happen to be cheaper too.
And who gives a flying fuck if they're made out three pieces of wood
instead of two? The effect on the sound is non-existant.
I agree though that the MIM pickups are less rich-sounding though --but you
can easily find a set of used MIA pickups cheap (buy them from people
installing hotrod boutique pickups).

I was sort of in the same boat. I have a MIM Fat Strat that I think is
great. But, my favorite is a used G&L S-500 I picked up used in almost mint
condition for $425.00----It is an absolutely fantastic playing guitar and
extremely versatile. I would most definitely buy another G&L---quality all
the way around is superb--I know they don't seem to hold their price
value--but I'm not collecting--I'm playing--and these are great guitars.
