I've been doing most of my drum recording using looping and manual
fills from my Yamaha PSR-290 keyboard. I'll augment it occaisioanly
with some live hand persussion. Since I'm actually a reasonably decent
drummer I've been looking for some inexpensive digital drums. I've
been looking at the Yamaha DD55 set. You can get them on ebay with one
foot pedal, the power converter and a somewhat suspect 30 day warranty
relplete with so many disclaimers it'd make Johnny Cochrans head spin.
So I check one out in person at GC and they tell me they'll let me take
one out the door with 2 foot pedals for $239.00 and the standard
warranty. I'm tempted, but not much. So today I'm walking through
Costco (don't laugh, it's the only place in Arizona where you can find
decent Maryland Style Crab Cakes). The wife says lets take a walk down
the music aisle, and there sits the new DD55C, same as the DD55 but
with a drum stand, plus a throne for my old tired, fat ass. Best of all
it's $199.95 out the door.
I get it home and it does just what it's supposed to do. After a bit of
tinkering I can find my way around the presets, the recording function
direct to midi (or not), the very realistic sounding 128 different
sound presets. Starting to sound like an ad-man here, but basically
what I'm getting at is that any of you guys out there looking for a
reaonably priced and much more effective sub for looping etc could do a
lot worse than this deal.
Just remember, it's close to the holidays, Coscto tends to run out of
stuff quick, and they usually do not restock specialty items. What I'm
getting at is that if you have a wife (or husband) planning on buying
you something for the holidays, you could do worse than pitch a
big-assed hint for one of these babies.
