What do you think of the Blues Jr? I'd be thinking small tube combo. If
you're buying new, you need to come up with about another $100 for the Blues
Jr, or you could look at something like the Crate V1512 which is a dual EL84
15w amp for about $359... People slag on Crate all day long, but this
particular line of amps have been getting rave reviews. I've never played
one
Used you should be able to find a Blues Jr for $300 or less. Drop a few
pedals in front and you have yourself a very versatile amp that you can
crank at home and play with friends.

You might take a look at a Fender FM-212R. I really haven't played
with it yet but the thought of getting a 100 watt 2x12 Fender combo
amp with a real Fender spring reverb for under $300 is certainly
intriguing. It's made in China, hence the attractive price. I'm
assuming, perhaps naively, that Fender wouldn't have put their name
on a piece of sh*t (although I could be wrong). Nevertheless, when
the time comes, I'll definitely do more research. They also have the
FM-210R which is 65 watts 2x10 for $269 and the FM-65R which is 65
watts 1x10 for $239. These prices are from Zzounds.com.

I jammed with some guys a few weeks ago in their space. They had 2 of
these FM 212's there, so I played through one, and the other git player
used the other. Not knowing the amp, I brought my POD XT, and used it to
create my sound. The other guy played through his straight, or through
some boss pedals. Overall, I would have to say that it was one of the
worst sounding amps I have ever heard. My POD XT helped a lot, but his
tone was just freaking aweful.
Your mileage may vary.

Line 6 Spider II 75 watter. My old lead player had one. Pretty versatile
for solid state. Or you might be able to find a Blues Jr. used for under
$300.

I'd second that. I found a used Blues Jr at a GC for $325. I put
an OCD in front for rock stuff or a FullDrive for pop jazz... great amp
for what it is.
