Anyone got a small Pignose amp? - NONE - 21:38 13-11-05

The small one that opens up with batteries inside, how do they sound?
Worth the money?

Well, I *used* to have one, about 25 years ago. I got it as collateral
against some money I loaned a guy. He never returned the money and I
kept the amp. I always thought it sounded like cold dogshit. I suppose
it could be useful for getting a couple of peculiar sounds, but in
general it was not good. It did have a cute knob, though.

Imagine yourself at least part-way to being Ernie Isley. Up to you.

Wasn't it Zappa's secret weapon in the studio? I heard he laid a LOT of
tracks with that original Pignose.

The small Pignose is what it is. It is basically a small transistor amp. I
have personally always liked the sounds that you can achieve while recording
with a Pignose. The "open" cabinet position is my particular favorite. In
a live situation, the small Pignose is quite interesting (but rather noisy)
as a preamp. My brother used to run one into a Fender Twin for several
Mountain tunes that his band covered. The dirty "buzz" that was there
during the silence between songs became something sweet and driving in the
midst of an all out amp frenzy.

They're cheap, give one a try,
Lulu : )

P.S. Don't expect a miracle and you won't be disappointed!

Sort of. It was one of many secret weapons FZ used (amp combinations,
contact pickups, you-name-it).

I don't know how true the newer ones are to the original...I bought an
original in the 70's brand new at Manny's on 48th Street in NYC. It
sounded pretty damn good with the cabinet open, too bassy with it
closed.

I think Frank Zappa used one for his solo on "Montana". That sounds
pretty impressive.
