Sheraton blues - Champagne Charlie - 18:59 12-11-05

I came across an Epihone Sheraton today in a second-hand store and decided
to have a go as I have always thought it to be a very nice guitar. It was
way over-priced in the shop though as a brand new one would have set me back
much less. Anyway, the Sheraton really 'looks' the part for sure...'very
good-looking guitar. However, as soon as my fingers landed on the fretboard,
I knew right away I didn't like this guitar at all from a playing point of
view. I play an Epi LP Standard and the action is smooth and fast, but this
Sheraton had a very rough, dry neck and I noticed how the neck felt very
broad compared to my LP and made the playing experience very uncomfortable.
The neck seemed to get broader as you moved upwards. Also, there was a very
large space between the 1st string and the edge of the neck which just
didn't feel natural at all. The same thing applied to the 6th string and the
other edge of the neck. Why these 'spaces' are there, I don't know, but
there was no way I could play this neck at speed. Fretting was okay if you
just played chords, but slides, hammers and pulls were not on! Bends were
so-so, but moving around in general felt rough and I was hampered by the
action somewhat. The frets were a tad meaty too which surprised me as this
looks for all the world like a fast "jazz" guitar. It felt comfy when seated
and just for a minute I thought I was HarryJ, :-) but this Sheraton is
definetely NOT HJ's Heritage! I am sadly let down as I had this guitar on my
short-list for my next instrument, but am now looking much more seriously at
the Samick Royale RL-3 as this has come very highly recommended indeed. BTW,
pickups were fine as was all the hardware...'a really nice guitar ruined by
a cheapo neck I have to say. What a shame this is.

Would a new nut have helped? Ive seen nice fretboards made horrible
with bad nut adjustment. My Johnson Tri-cone is a good example of that.
It is nearly unplayable, with the strings 1/8" off the fret and too
close together. Great for slide, useless for picking.

I tried one of those Samicks last night those are nice, as well
as an SG Standard, both new. But considering what I had
said earlier about "USA MADE" I left with the Gibson.
Put my money where my mouth is...........MJP

PS. Dont get me wrong i am not saying you have to do this.
I just prefer US guitars, But all my amp money goes to
England, i buy Marshall.

Hey M.J.P. How did you feel about the Samick and considering you opted for
the Gib SG standard, which model in the Samick range did you try and how
would you rate it? (Marks out of10?). I don't have the opportunity to play
it first as I can't find a store selling Samick guitars, but everyone who
has actually played one is one step ahead of me, so I always like to hear
their opinions. I know I'll just buy one thro mail order anyway. Not the
best way to buy a guitar, but I don't have a choice really. I really wanted
the Sheraton to play well, but it's got to be off my list now :-( The first
time I saw the Samick RL-3, I thought "that looks like the guitar for me"
(excepting the Heritage of course, which is lovely, but pricey), and I ain't
stopped thinking about it since. I wish I could find a store locally with
one for sale. That would be great, but I am still looking. Hey, I never knew
that Marshall were British, I always thought they were US. Don't know why
though as I had heard of Jim Marshall before, but I'm not too gen'd up on
the business side of musical things. I just like to play the instruments and
amps. I like Marshall amps, and also Fender and Messa Boogie. Great sounds!
Always wondered though why amp prices are so low compared to guitar prices.
I mean, a good Marshall head and a nice 4 x 12 cab is less than half a grand
here in the UK...'much less.
Cheers.

I often read Guitar&Bass, and sometimes Guitarist. The prices are insane!
Usually they are at least 20-30% more than the german ones.

However, I have found stringbusters.com to be very competitive.

Hi

I have an epi sheraton (it is about 14 years old) and love it to bits,
the action is pretty low and it is very easy to play slides, hammers
and pulls. Did the one you try not just need some adjustment?

Maybe it needed some adjusts, but I did give it the same chance as I give
other guitars in stores, which is to just play em as I find em. It would be
great if we could take em home for a few days before deciding to buy. I
really did like the way the guitar looked and even felt, in every
dept....'except that fretboard. I will try another one though as I am
finding it hard to believe an Epi Sheraton could be that bad.

Cheers.
