Went from "Black Dog" to "Feelings" - Johnny Thunders Jr. - 11:09 07-11-05

My wife was listening to some mellow radio station and "Feelings" came
on. I never noticed, but it has some catchy guitar work and the singer
is pretty good also.
While everyone was sleeping, I downloaded the song and started to work
out the piece on my classical (which I haven't touched in 15 years).
I haven't touched my LP or Strat for a week. Did anyone have this
happen after playing heavy rock for ever and ever? I don't know if I'm
just getting old or my sexual orientation is about to change.....
Thanks
Johnny

Your tastes change as you get older. I was (and still am to a lesser
degree these days) a big fan of heavy metal. But, where I used to turn
my nose up to a lot of classic rock, I find myself really enjoying it
and having fun discovering all sorts of stuff that I missed when I was
younger; most of it isn't even music of "my" generation and some of it
was recorded before I was even born. I've always listened to classic
rock, but I never got into it like I do now. This might be in part to
there being very little new music that has caught my ear and part of it
might be just getting older and more mellow. Either way, I'm glad I
discovered so much good music that has always been there and I might
have missed if I hadn't become more open minded (or older).

I'm the same exact way but I don't think it's us getting mellow, it's
because most of the so called rock that's force fed on the radio today
really does suck! It's not really the artists fault I don't think but more
the labels and radio stations. Rock is coming back though, there are some
good up and comers that know how to rock, it is a little watered down but
still good stuff. I think also now we appreciate the classic stuff more
because I know for myself I can actually hear the musicality of it and in
most modern stuff I can't. Mostly nowadays it's just dropped D or C or stuff
played on a baritone guitar in B with shitloads of gain.
Nah this aint like how people felt about The Beatles and Elvis et al, it's
about whether it's music or not.

Years ago, I used to play the vocal melody of "Feelings" on my
keyboardist's synth at band practice for laughs. Yeah, I was pretty
immature.
I'm 20 years older now. I've been married twice and raised two kids. I
listen to a lot of stuff I'd never even consider in my younger days.
I've always listened to a variety of styles. But age has made me
appreciate even more. (Except that I still hate the Eagles with every
last fiber of my being. I doubt that will ever change.)

As long as you're not listening to Erasure or Depeche Mode, I think
your orientation is safe...

Feelings ? Its got nothing to do with getting older and mellower.
You're definately turning gay. Dont worry about it though. Its not
your fault and has always been there.

A change of name might be appropriate at this time. Maybe some of
the other axe men here could come up with something a little more
fitting?

I just pray it never gets to the point of actually listening to the song
"Feelings".

I agree.

Last week I bought a download CD of Johnny Cash.
Plus people who play instruments listen to music different than those
that don't.

About to?! Sounds to me like you're already raiding your wife's
underwear drawer for something to wear... <G>
Just kidding. Sounds like you have or are developing eclectic taste in
music after being in a rut. I listen to just about anything but rap,
and even some of that has some good music behind it if I could stand
the vocal delivery. I'm subject to doing some head-banging stuff one
day and country or some mellow acoustic thing like Gordon Lightfoot
the next.

Was it Mojo Nixon who once referred to them as "...the

When you're younger, you tend to categorize things as "cool" or "fool"
with little thought or reason. Your may decide that what your peers are
listening to is what it's about, or you may decide that what your
parents listen to is old and stupid. You may decide that if it's
popular it must be bad, and you'll only listen to something that's
obscure, or that everybody else hates, or that nobody else has ever
herad of. You might decide that you'll only listen to certain genres.
There are all sorts of blinders we place over our own senses.
Ideally, as you get older, you grow to realize that there is a lot of
good to be had from just about any influence. That doesn't mean you
have to love it, or adopt it wholesale, but I think you ought to at
least check it out with an open mind. Most music has some good
qualities, and you might find some enjoyment in them if you don't
reject them first. You might even find some aspects that you can
incorporate into your own playing.
In the case of "Feelings", yeah, it's one of the stereotypical schlock
ballads, but it's actually a pretty well-written song. I have a
recording of it by Sarah Vaughan, and while she's horsing around with
it to an extent, she make it sound hipper than the original.
