54. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

This record is quintessential Hendrix. While each of the three albums released by the Experience are brilliant, Electric Ladyland is the group's masterpiece, maybe because Hendrix was allowed free reign on this album. It's full with inventive guitar work, trippy lyrics and Hendrix's best vocal work.

Side A

1.- ...AND GODS MADE LOVE
(instrumental)

2.- HAVE YOU EVER BEEN
(TO ELECTRIC LADYLAND)

Have you ever been, have you ever been to Electric Ladyland ?
The magic carpet waits for you, so don't you be late.
I wanna show you different emotions,
I wanna ride you through the sounds and motions,
electric woman waits for you and me.
So it's time to take a ride,
you can cast all hang-ups over the side
while we fly right over the loved filled sea,
look up ahead, I see the love land,
soon you'll understand.
Make love, make love,
make love, make love.

I wanna show you angels will spread their wings,
I wanna show you, good and evil lay side by side
while electric love penetrates the sky.
I wanna show you,
I wanna show you.

3.- CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC

You jump in front of my car when you know all the time
that ninety miles an hour, girl, is the speed I drive.
You tell me it's alright, you don't mind a little pain,
you say you just want me to take you for a drive.
You're just like crosstown traffic,
so hard to get thgough you, crosstown traffic.
I need to run over you, crosstown traffic,
all you do is slow me down,
I'm trying to get on the other side of the town.

I'm not the only soul accused of hit and run,
tiretracks all across your back, aha, I can see you had fun.
But-a darling, can't you see my signals turn from green to red,
and with you I can see a traffic jam straight up ahead.
You're just like crosstown traffic,
so hard to get through you, crosstown traffic,
I don't need to run over you, crosstown traffic,
all you do is slow me down,
and I got better things on the other side of town.
Crosstown traffic,
look out, look out, baby.

4.- VOODOO CHILD

Stevie Winwood - organ
Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane) -bas

Well, I'm a voodoo chile, Lord, I'm a voodoo chile.

Well, the night I was born, Lord, I swear the moon turned a fire-red.
The night I was born, I swear the moon turned a fire-red.
My poor mother cried out, "Lord, the gypsy was right"',
and I see her fell down right dead.

Well, mountain lions found me there waitin',
and they set me on an eagle's back.
Well, mountain lions found me there
and set me on an eagle's wings.
He took me past the outskirts of infinity;
and when he brought me back, he gave me Venus witch's sing.
And he said, "Fly on, fly on",
'cause I'm a voodoo chile, voodoo chile.

Well, I make love to you and Lord knows you felt no pain.
I said, I make love to you in your sleep
and God knows you felt no pain.
"Cause I'm a million miles away ans at the same time
I'm right here inside your picture frame,
'cause I'm a voodoo chile,
Lord knows, I'm a voodoo chile, babe.

My arrows are made of desires from far away
as Jupiter sulphur mines.
I said, my arrows are made of desires from far away
as Jupiter sulphur mines.
Way down by the methane sea.
I have a humming bird that hums so loud,
you think you were losing your mind.

Well, I float in liquid gardens in Arizona's new red sands.
Well, I float in liquid gardens way down in Arizona's new red sands.
I taste the honey from a flower name Blue, way down in California,
and New York drowns as we held hands.
'Cause I'm a voodoo chile,
Lord knows, I'm a voodoo chile, babe.

Side B

1.- LITTLE MISS STRANGE
(by Noel Redding)

Al Kooper - pian

No one knows where she comes from;
maybe she's a devil in disguise.
I can tell by looking in her eyes:
little miss strange, little miss strange.

Little miss strange came into my parlor,
I don't know just what to ask her.
I don't remember what we did after,
little miss strange, little miss strange.

Little miss strange came out of the darkness,
walked across my head and stood beneath the lights.
I'm talking about the dream I had the other night.
Little miss strange
Little miss strange

2.- LONG HOT SUMMER NIGHT

Sure it was a long, long, long hot summer night
as far as my eyes could see,
but my heart was way down in a cold, cold winter storm.
Oh my darling, where can you be ?

There were three sugar walls and two candy cane
windows
but Sylvia's mood melted all those in sight.
Everybody's on fire but I'm snowing in a cold blizzard.
Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer,
where are you on this-uh hot cold summer,
where are you on this-uh hot cold summer night ?

Around about this time the telephone blew its horn
across the room,
scared little Annie clean out of her mind
(Roman the candle, he peeps out of this peek-a-boo, hide and seek)
and grabs little Annie from the ceiling just in time.
And the telephone keeps on screaming: yeah yeah yeah yeah.

"Hello", said my shaky voice, "Well, how you doing ?"
I start to stutter, "Uh uh, can't you tell I'm doing fine ?"
It was my baby talking and she's way down 'cross the border,
she says, "I'm going to hurry to you,
I've been a fool and I'm tired of crying".

It was a long, long hot summer night as far as my eyes could see
but I can feel the heat coming on as my baby's getting closer.
I'm so glad that my baby's coming to rescue me,
so glad that my baby's coming to rescue me.

3.- COME ON - PART 1
(by Earl King - chitarist R&B din New Orleans)

Peolpe talking but they just don't know
what's in my heart and why I love you so.
I love you, baby, like a miner loves gold,
come on sugar, let the good times roll.

So many people live and make believe
that keep a lot of dough it up their sleeve,
but my lover baby isn't that kind of fool,
come on baby, let the good times roll.

Oh love is nice if it's understood,
it's even nicer when you're feeling good.
You got me flipping like a flag on a boat,
come on sugar, let the good times roll.

4.- GYPSY EYES

Well, I realize that I've been hypnotised,
I love you Gypsy eyes, I love you Gypsy eyes.

Way up in my tree I'm sitting by my fire,
wondering where in this world might you be,
and knowing all the time you still are roaming the country side.
Do you still think about me ? Oh, my gypsy eyes.

Well, I walked right on up your rebel roadside,
the one that rambles on for a million miles.
Yes, I walked down this road, searching for your love
and uh my soul too,
and when I find you, I ain't gonna let you go.

I remember the first time I saw you,
the tears in your eyes look like they was trying to say,
"Oh little boy, you know I could love you
but first I must make my getaway,
two strange men fighting to the death over me today,
I'll try to meet you by the old highway".

I realize that I've been hypnotized,
I love you, Gypsy eyes, I love you, Gypsy eyes.
I've been searching so long, my feet they painfully leave the battle,
down against the road my weary knees take their place.
Off to the side I fall, but I hear a sweet call.
My Gypsy eyes has found me and I've been saved,
Lord, I've been saved.
That's why I love you, Lord knows I love you.

5.- BURNING OF THE MIDNIGHT LAMP

The morning is dead and the day is too.
There's nothing left here to greet me but the velvet moon.
All my loneliness I have felt today,
it's a little more than enough to make a man throw himself away,
and I continue to burn the midnight lamp alone.

Now the smiling portrait of you is still hanging on my drowning wall,
it really doesn't, it really doesn't bother me at all,
it's just the ever falling dust that makes it so hard for me to see,
that forgotten earring laying on the floor facing coldly
towards the door,
and I continue to burn the midnight lamp alone.

So here I sit and face the same old ffireplace,
keep running through the same old thoughts of you going
through my mind,
and soon enough time will tell about the purpose
in the wishing well.
And someone will write a spell fro me, someone will tell my spell,
and I continue to burn the same old lamp alone.

Side C

1.- RAINY DAY, DREAM AWAY

Mike Finnigan - organ
Larry Faucette - congas
Freddie Smith - horn
Buddy Miles - baterie

Rainy day, dream away, let the sun take a holiday,
flowers bathe and see the children play, lay back and groove on a rainy day
Well, I can see a bunch of wet preachers; look at them on the run.
The carnival traffic noise, it sinks to a splashy hum,
even the ducks can groove, rain battering in the parkside pool,
and I'm leaning on my window sill, digging everything.

Rainy day, rain all day, ain't no use in getting up tight.
Just let it groove its own way, let it drain your worries away.
Lay back and groove on a rainy day, lay back and dream
on a rainy day.

2.- 1983...
(A MERMAN I SHOULD TURN TO BE)

Hooray, I awake from yesterday,
alive but the war is here to stay.
So my love Catherina and me
decide to take our last walk through the noise to the sea'
not to die, but to be re-born
away from lands so battered and torn, forever.

Oh say, can you see it's really such a mess ?
Every inch of earth is a fighting nest,
giant pencil and lipstick tube shaped things,
continue to rain and cause screaming pain,
and the artic stains from silver blue to bloody red
as our feet find the sands and the sea is straight ahead.

Well, it's too bad that our friends can't be with us today,
well, it's too bad.
The machine that we built would never save us,
that's what they say,
(that's why they not have come up with us today.)
They also said, "It's impossible
for a man to live and breathe under water forever".
That was their mind complaint,
and they also threw this in my face, they said,
"anyway, you know good and well it would be beyond
the will of God and the grace of the king".

So my darling and I make love in the sand
to salute the last moment ever on dry land.
Our machine, it has done its work, played its part well,
without a scratch on our bodies and we bid it farewell.
Starfish and giant foams greet us with a smile,
before our heads go under we take a last look
at the killing noise of the out of style.

3.- MOON TURNS THE TIDES...
GENTLY, GENTLY AWAY

So down and down and down and down and down and down we go.
Hurry, my darling, we mustn't be late for the show.
Neptune champion games to an aqua world is so very dear.
"Right this way", smiles a mermaid, I can hear Atlantis full of cheer,
Atlantis full of cheer, I can hear Atlantis full of cheer.

Side D

1.- STILL RAINING, STILL DREAMING

Mike Finnigan - organ
Larry Faucette - congas
Freddie Smith - horn
Buddy Miles - baterie

Rainy day, rain all day, ain't no use in getting up tight.
Just let it groove its own way, let it drain your worries away.
Lay back and groove on a rainy day,
lay back and dream on a rainy day.

2.- HOUSE BURNING DOWN

Hey, hey, hey, hey,
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red,
Somebody's house is burning down,
down, down, down, down, down, down.

Well, I asked my friend, "Where is that black smoke coming from ?"
He just coughed and changed the subject and said,
"Uh, it might snow some(where)".
So I left him sipping his tea, and I jumped in my chariot
and rode off to see just why and who it could be this time.
Sisters and brothers, daddies, mothers standing 'round crying,
when I reached the scene the flames were making a ghostly whine.
So I stood on my horse back, and I screamed without a crack,
I say, "Oh baby, why did you burn your brother's house down ?"
Hey, hey, hey, hey,
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red, Lord,
somebody's house is burning down, down, down, down. -
somebody's house is burning down, down, down, down

Well, someone stepped from the crowd,
he was nineteen miles high.
He shouts, "We're tired and disgusted,
so we paint red through the sky".
I say, "The truth is straight ahead,
so don't burn yourself instead.
Trying to learn instead of burn, hear what I say".
So I finally rode away, but I"ll never forget that day.
"Cause when I reached the valley, I looked 'way
down 'cross the way;
a giant boat from space landed with eerie grace,
and came and taking all the dead away.
Hey, hey, hey, hey.
Look at the sky turn a hell fire red, Lord,
somebody's house is burning down, down, down, down.

3.- ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER
(by Bob Dylan)

"There must be some kind-a way out of here",
said the joker to the thief,
"There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief.
Businessmen they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth.
None will level on the line, nobody of it is worth, hey".
"No reason to get excited", the thief he kindly spoke,
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate.
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late, hey".
All along the watchtower princess kept the view,
While all the women came and went, barefoot servants too.
Outside in the cold distance a wildcat did growl,
Two riders were approaching and the wind began to howl, hey.
All along the watchtower.

4.- VOODOO CHILD (SLIGHT RETURN)

Well, I stand up next to a mountain
and I chop it down with the edge of my hand,
Well, I stand up next to a mountain
and I chop it down with the edge of my hand,
Well, I pick up all the pieces and make an island
might even raise just a little sand.
"Cause I'm a voodoo child,
Lord knows, I'm a voodoo child, baby.

I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time,
I'll give it right back to you one of these days.
I said, I didn't mean to take up all your sweet time,
I'll give it right back one of these days.
And if don't meet you no more in this world
then I'll meet you in the next one,
so don't be late, don't be late.
'Cause I'm a voodoo child,
Lord knows, I'm a voodoo child, baby.
